Welcome

Are you a physician looking to re-invent yourself?

Maybe you are thinking about an MBA or a Medical Informatics program. Maybe you have already started taking classes towards one of these (or another) degree(s).

Maybe you don’t know what your options are or what direction you want to go in and you don’t want to waste a lot of money or time.

Or are you just feeling burned out?

Whether you are just looking at your options or already taking steps to prepare for the uncertain future of healthcare, you’ve come to the right place.

One of the most common things I hear from doctors is fear.

Fear is for a number of reasons:

  • What is out there?
  • What if I can’t find a way to be happy in my career?
  • How will I make the salary I need and am accustomed to?
  • What will my family and friends think?
  • What if the hospital or my partners find out?

Most have no idea where to turn. Many have been unhappy for years, maybe since their training; some started to feel dissatisfaction 5-6 years ago that has continued to grow stronger.

Career and Personal Development doesn't always mean complete transition to a non-clinical career. Diversifying yourself is a great way to start when you feel overwhelmed or burned out.

Some physicians find peer-to-peer coaching and mentoring to be a great way to reduce feelings of stagnation and to rediscover passion about their career or job. This has been the experience of physician executives as well as physicians in clinical practice.

Your ability to thrive as a doctor is dependent on a number of factors. Here are some of the questions to consider:

  • What kind of skills would help improve your situation and give you more career satisfaction?
  • What subject you always been interested in learning about?
  • What schedule changes would give you more work/life balance?
  • Do you have a regular exercise routine?
  • Are you aware of all the options available to you for work as a doctor?
  • What was your biggest dream (besides going to medical school)?

Doctors in Career Transition

The book Physicians in Transition - Interviews with 25 doctors who successful reinvented themselves reveals that our country is not making it easy for those who choose a career in the medical field. You go to medical school, rack up huge student loan debt, and then get hit with a malpractice lawsuit. It’ll been 10 years at least before you’ll break even. Is there something wrong with this picture? Are the banks, lawyers, and insurance companies the ones responsible for the high cost of health care?
